For the past two years, Mirra Andreeva has not only shown that she’s destined for greatness but also has normalized being in the Top 20 as a 17-year-old girl. The Russian star is into her fourth career semifinals at the Brisbane International. She will face Aryna Sabalenka to get to the final, but she’s not afraid of confronting the WTA No. 1.

Andreeva continued from where she stopped last season at the Ningbo Open, where she finished as runners-up. The 17-year-old fended off Ons Jabeur 6-4, 7-6(2) in the quarterfinals in Brisbane. She’s into her first semifinals of the 2025 season in her opening tournament of the year.

However, she will face Sabalenka on Saturday (January 4), a rematch of the 2024 French Open quarterfinals. Both players met at the Roland Garros in June last year, where Andreeva defeated the three-time major winner in three sets. Sabalenka qualified for the semifinals in Brisbane after beating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes.

During Andreeva’s press conference, she revealed that she’s full prepared to beat Sabalenka in their fourth meeting in the WTA. The teenager boasted that she has improved in every aspect of her game this season.

I would say that I have improved a lot in all aspects of my game. I feel I hit my shots with more strength and have greater physical power. I am very satisfied with the way I am playing, and I believe it is because we did a great job in the preseason. For months now, I have seen myself ready to win important matches, and now even more so. I think it is all due to a great improvement in the mental aspect.

Sabalenka leads the head-to-head against Andreeva 2-1, with all previous encounters coming on clay. The former won the first two meetings in straight sets before Andreeva stunned with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 win in last year’s Roland Garros quarterfinals.

Mirra Andreeva heaps praise on her coach Conchita Martinez

Mirra Andreeva will turn 18 in April, but she is already in her fourth semifinals on the WTA Tour. The 17-year-old has finished the 2024 season brightly after winning the Iasi Open and reaching the final of the Ningbo Open. However, her major transformation since last season has been connected to her coach Conchita Martinez.

The Spanish coach has brought stamina into the youngster’s game which has helped her become a top player. In the aforementioned press conference, she revealed how invaluable her coach has been to her growth on the Tour.

I would say that, sometimes, I am still very much a child, and I can get angry if someone tells me something I don’t like. My reaction is to do something that annoys that person. That’s why I would say it is difficult to work with me, but we have learned to laugh at myself and those reactions. Conchita is doing very well with me.
