Mischa Zverev showed little sympathy after his brother Alexander Zverev‘s emotional remarks following his early Wimbledon exit. Speaking on Amazon Prime Video Germany, Mischa seemed surprised and somewhat dismissive of Alexander’s public comments about his mental struggles.

Alexander, the world No. 3, had suffered a five-set defeat to France’s Arthur Rinderknech in the first round. The match lasted nearly five hours and stretched across two days on Centre Court. It marked a significant upset against the 72nd-ranked player. Zverev said on Amazon Prime Germany:

Life is very hard in many countries. I think life is much harder for many children in Africa than it is for a tennis player at Wimbledon. Having children myself, I have become very pragmatic and have a very rational view of the situation. Of course, life is hard, but millions of other people have a hard life, even though we professional tennis players are in the media and the spotlight.

After the loss, Alexander opened up in his press conference, saying he felt “empty” and “alone.” He admitted to lacking joy in his life and even hinted at seeking professional help, saying it might be the first time he considers therapy.

His coach and older brother Mischa, a former top-25 player who retired in 2023, didn’t echo the concern shown by others, including former world No. 7 Barbara Schett. While Schett voiced support and worry, Mischa’s reaction suggested confusion or disbelief more than compassion.

Alexander Zverev falls in the ATP rankings

Alexander Zverev started the season really well by reaching the Australian Open final. However, his loss in the final at Melbourne to Jannik Sinner was the beginning of a black hole that he dragged himself into.

The German has only won one ATP title this season, which came at the Munich Open. Zverev initially was the World No.2 in 2025 and had created a distance between himself and Carlos Alcaraz. However, his decline and Spaniard’s rise has only made things worse for him.

The good thing for Zverev is that he is still only World No.3. However, he would have points to defend after the US Open, particularly at the Paris Masters later this year. He would need to pick up on his results if he wants to maintain his No.3 ranking. The only way he can lose his ranking is if Jack Draper wins Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev’s chances at the US Open

German superstar Alexander Zverev is up against it coming into the US Open. With Wimbledon still going on, the former World No.2 is already out of the tournament.

He is a former finalist at the US Open, losing to Dominic Thiem in the 2020 final. The German lead by two sets and a break before falling to the Austrian in his first Grand Slam final.

Zverev made two more finals, which came at Roland Garros last year and the Australian Open this year. However, he has been unable to crack the code for his Grand Slam success. If he wants to win the US Open, firstly, he would need to get his mental state in check. Then, he would have to prioritize his performances at the Canadian Masters and the Cincinnati Open.
