Will Smith becomes prey of Smith-Rock controversy

Catcher Will Smith seemingly has done enough to avoid being mistaken for the much more veteran Hollywood actor of the same name, despite being on the verge of becoming a perpetual All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Kentucky native found himself in an embarrassing situation when his afternoon at the ballpark included a downpour of boos — and a slap hit to the outfield.

All must be aware of the infamous incident that took place at the 2022 Academy Awards where the ‘King Richard’ actor reacted violently after comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head during the ceremony.

Cut to today, the Dodgers catcher, who happens to share a name with a certain Academy Award winner, was greeted Thursday with jeers from the crowd during LA’s spring training game against the Texas Rangers in Arizona. Later, the 27-year-old hit the ball into deep centre field for a triple but his Dodgers, unfortunately, lost to the Rangers, 8-2.

Will Smith issues apology to Chris Rock over Oscars’ slapping scandal

The 53-year-old Smith has issued an apology in public for striking presenter Chris at this year’s Academy Awards. In an Instagram post on Monday afternoon, Smith called his behaviour “unacceptable and inexcusable.”

Here’s is Will Smith’s full apology statement:

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behaviour has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.”
