Cincinnati Reds’ rookies are becoming national sensations and creating history in their first season itself. Infielder Elly De La Cruz earned himself the moniker of “World’s fastest man” after he ran a lightning-quick leg-out triple in 10 seconds and also hit a 458-foot-long home run all in his debut game.
Now, pitcher Andrew Abbott scripted history as he became the first pitcher since 1893 when the mound was moved to its current distance to throw 17.2 scoreless innings to start his career. Abbott etches his name in the history books during the Reds’ game against the Houston Astros.
Andrew Abbott opened the game for the Reds with six scoreless innings. Cincinnati won the game 2-1 without much effort against the Astros. Moreover, this wasn’t the only record Abbott created since his debut in the major league.
Andrew Abbott off to a magical start to his MLB career
The Reds’ star pitcher, Andrew Abbott, also became the first pitcher in MLB history since 1893 to start his career with three consecutive scoreless starts of at least five innings. Additionally, the 24-year-old also became the first Reds’ pitcher since 1893 to begin his MLB career with consecutive scoreless starts for more than five innings.
Reds‘ manager David Bell was quite happy with Abbott’s performance against the Astros. Bell said that Andrew performed according to their game plan and also added that the win was impossible to win without his near-perfect pitching. “Andrew did exactly what we needed. Clearly, we couldn’t have won that game without his performance. We know that comes up a lot and starting pitching is really important.”
Abbott, who’s off to a historic start, said of his performance via MLB.com, “That’s pretty cool. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in unless the team is playing well behind me, that’s first and foremost. Luke [Maile], behind the plate, calling outstanding games for me.” Abbott also added that things are finally going the right way for the Reds and the locker room, and hopes that the winning streak continues. Cincinnati is currently on a six-game winning streak with a winning percentage of .500 and is second in the NL Central division.
Andrew Abbott was first drafted by the New York Yankees in the 2017 MLB draft, but he did not sign with the franchise and instead went to play college ball for the University of Virginia. The Cincinnati Reds selected him in the second round of the 2021 MLB draft and signed with them.
Abbott played in the minors for the Reds, and his performance was noteworthy. Finally, his dream came true when the Reds called him up to the majors in 2023 and the rest is quite literally history.
