The streak is finally over. On Sunday afternoon, the Chicago White Sox ended their 10-game losing run as they come back and won against the Tampa Bay Rays. The match itself was something like a Hollywood drama as the South Siders, came back from the dead to walk it off. Andrew Vaughn’s three-run walk-off bomb gave his side their first win since April 18.
The White Sox started the season as one of the favorites to win the American League Central ahead of the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians. The Sox started the season with a 7-11 record. Things went drastically wrong for them as they embarked on an unwanted 10-game losing streak which saw their record at 7-21.
The team was perhaps unlucky to get mixed in these runs of form. They seemed to be in cruise control on Saturday as their starting pitcher threw six scoreless innings. They were leading the game by three runs then. However, the bullpen gave up ten runs in the seventh inning as the Rays won 12-3.
It seemed that would continue on Sunday as well as the White Sox once again surrendered their lead. They went into the final inning down by four runs. This time they were determined to not repeat the similar mistakes they made before. A seven-run rally started with a double from Jake Burger and was capped off by Vaughn’s three-run home run.
Twitter reacts as White Sox beat Tampa Bay Rays to end unwanted run of losses
Well, it was a much-needed result for the White Sox. This was their longest losing run since July 2013 when they lost 10 games as well. Despite the win, they are currently nine games behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central standings. This also marked their worst 29-game start ever since 2018 when they had a record of 9-20.
Fans of the team have been very vocal regarding their team’s performance this year. “Sell the Team” chants have been echoed around their ballpark. A win against arguably the best team this year, the Tampa Bay Rays was a welcome boost. Here are some of the reactions that the team has got since this win.
The White Sox would be hoping this is the start of good things to come. There is no rest for them as they take on Central division rivals Twins next. This three-game series will be key in the Central division race as the Guardians themselves are 3.5 games behind the Twins. The division which started as the most boring one has the potential of becoming a three-team race.
