The rivalry between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets has been on the rise for the past few years. The two National League East teams have been battling for division supremacy for a while now. This season, the Mets have hit a slump and look a shadow of their former selves. On Saturday, the Braves added more salt to the wounded season of the Mets as they crushed them 21-3.
Having lost the first game of the series 7-0, the Mets were hoping to bounce back in the doubleheader. Things, however, went bad to worse as the 2021 World Series winners started the game where they left off the previous one. Matt Olson turned out to be the star of the show as he homered twice to take the lead in the home run standings ahead of Shohei Ohtani.
Another player who shined brightly in this thumping win was Nicky Lopez. In his first start for the team since being traded from the Kansas City Royals, he finished the day with four hits and five RBIs to his name. He also tossed a scoreless ninth inning, as the game was eventually done and dusted by then.
He is now the third player this year to hit a home run and proceed to throw a scoreless inning. The frustrations for the Mets were clearly seen in a video of Pete Alonso destroying the dugout. It has been that type of year for the Mets, where everything seems to have gone against them.
Twitter reacts as the Atlanta Braves thump struggling NY Mets in game one of a doubleheader
The 2023 season has been a horrendous one for the NY Mets. A team with the highest payroll in MLB this year was expected to deliver much better performances. The heavy expectations from the team have come crashing down as the Mets face the daunting scenario of losing out on wild card spots as well. It was going to be difficult to replace two ace pitchers in the form of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer so quickly.
The NY Mets decided to trade away their two aging pitchers for some young talent. However, things did not work out well for them. Manager Buck Showalter mentioned how hard the season has been for them. “It’s hard, but they’re trying,” he was quoted as saying by CBS Sports. Fans were quick to venr their feelings and did not hold back on Twitter to mock the Mets. Here are a few of them.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Braves win again, this time by a score of 6-0. The 27 runs given up in two games by the Mets were the most they have ever allowed on a single day in their history. They would be hoping to avoid getting swept when they take to the field on Sunday night, as the Mets fall 23.5 games behind their opponents.
