“One of the most historic pieces- Yankees legend Babe Ruth baseball glove auctioned for record $1.53 million
Babe Ruth's glove
On Saturday, the baseball glove worn by New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth got sold off in an auction. The bid was at a colossal rate of $1527,500 million. Donated it to St. Louis Browns third baseman Jimmy Austin, the baseball glove made a shattering record in MLB by itself. As per Hunt Auctions, Ruth’s glove date back to 1927 to 1933.
Till now, no one has paid such a high amount for a glove. Looking back in 1999, Lou Gehrig sold his glove at $387,500, and Jackie Robinson sold his glove in 2013 through Steiner Sports for just $373,000. In both the World Series of 1955 and 1956, Jackie used that glove.
As the President of Hunt Auctions, David Hunt, said, “This monumental glove is truly [one] of the most historic pieces of its medium to have ever been offered at public auction”. It was manufactured from 1927-1933 by Spalding.

After rummaging through the past records, a beautiful memory was found. Austin was having a moment with his precious glove, as he pounded on its leather. It was an audio recording from 1964, used in “The Glory of Their Times”. Before getting the glove sold, it was believed to be Babe Ruth’s vintage model submitted for consignment.
In a statement from Hunt Auctions, Susan Kolokoff, niece of Jimmy Austin commented, “My childhood memories with my ‘Uncle Jim’ are extremely dear to me”. “The glove had rested in a box for the last 30 years until we learned of its history and heard the amazing audio recording.”
According to Associated Press, it was the first time a glove sold off at such a high rate. Babe Ruth said that the mitt remained with the Austin family after he gave it to infielder Jimmy. To prove its authenticity, an image of Ruth wearing the glove with identical tobacco staining was shown.
