Dale Scott is a master, with his noted accomplishments Dale Scott accomplished as one of Major League Baseball’s most respected umpires, he is truly an inspiration. He was calling three World Series, three All-Star Games, and over 91 postseason games between 1986-2017.
Umpires generally try to avoid any spotlight on themselves because it is understood, that when the criticism comes in, it comes in hard. But Dale Scott believed that his truth should be known as it could motivate hundreds.
Dale Scott became the first openly gay official in any of the United States’ four major male professional sports i.e., MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL. He said he experienced a positive impact and wrote in his new book, “I wanted to be known not as ‘that gay umpire, but instead, just as an umpire who happens to be gay.”

Dale Scott speaks upon his emergence as MLB’s first openly gay umpire
Dale Scott was questioned on his book “The Umpire is out” premiere and signing, the 29-year veteran came out in a profile piece in an October edition of Referee magazine. He said,
“My thought process was is that there’s a story about my career and how I got started in umpiring and they’re talking to people I have known since junior high and it didn’t seem right to have a whole story and pictures without a picture of [husband] Mike [Rausch] and I, someone who’s been with me through this entire process. We met the October after my first year in the big leagues.”
He continued, “Obviously, when I sent that picture to [Referee magazine editor] Jeff [Stern], I knew exactly what it meant. In a small way, this was opening that door in a publication that wasn’t going to be circulated nationwide. It could be picked up, but it’s not Time magazine. I decided to go ahead and do it because I felt it was the right thing to do.”

He was further questioned over the reaction he got when he announced the truth about his sexual orientation, he said, “It’s been great. A lot of it is people messaging me on social media. At a signing in San Francisco, I had a lesbian couple come up, and she was crying. That was so touching. My coming out was pretty easy. I figured out who I was and accepted it.”
