The year 2023 has been a tough one for the New York Yankees. The most successful team in MLB has fallen well short of their desired targets. Following their loss against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night, the team once again had a negative record. As the team celebrates their annual tradition of Old-Timers’ Day, their former pitcher, David Wells, has now blasted the players and supported the management.

Wells was a part of the Yankees’ 1998 World Series-winning team. Though he represented nine teams in his career, he is fondly remembered for his time at the Bronx Bombers. He even threw the 15th perfect game in the league’s history that year. So for him to say such strong words meant something was wrong with the team.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and coach Aaron Boone have both faced the wrath of fans after poor performances this season. The fans have called for their sacking on numerous occasions. Wells has come out in support of them and claimed that they should not be blamed. He instead wants to see the players take responsibility for their actions.

“If I was a GM, I would start sending a message: I don’t care who it was if he’s in the stink hole.. send that son of a gun to Triple-A or Double-A,” he said when asked about the team struggles this year. “I don’t care how much money you are making, send a message to him and let him sit down there and go think about it,” he was quoted by the NY Post.

While the New York Yankees might be struggling this year, they have closely followed their traditions. The 75th Old-Timers’ Day celebration saw the likes of Jorge Posada, Andy Pettite, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter welcomed into the club. As the core four returned to the Yankees, the highlight of the show was stolen by David Wells as he appeared in the Yankee shirt while taping it up.

The former pitcher would tape the Nike and Bud Light logos on this jersey, which left some fans stunned. He would later claim that he hates Nike and this woke culture. “I hate Nike, they are woke,” he said. He further added that he was not retired; he would tear out the logos from his jersey and then play.

While his hatred for the two sponsors could be justified for personal reasons, the statement regarding the team has seen mixed reactions. Some have applauded him for calling out the big names, while others have fired shots at him for backing Cashman and Boone.

The Yankees will now enter Sunday night games hoping to avoid a series sweep following their 9-2 loss on Saturday. They are currently 70-72, two games behind a winning record. They might be out of playoff contention, but the fans would hope they could at least finish the season on a winning note. Following this series, they take on a four-game series against their rivals, the Boston Red Sox.
