“He’s his toughest critic”: Dustin May showcases tremendous pitching in comeback, dazzles MLB Twitter fans

Dustin May

Dustin May is Los Angeles Dodger’s 24-year-old pitcher, he delivered an electric example in his 2022 season debut on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium. May made the line-up after 476 days, returning from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in May 2021. And he gave the Miami Marlin hitter something that they were not expecting.

Dustin May was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, and made his MLB debut in 2019 and has shown exceptional promise in parts of the past three seasons. On Saturday night, Dustin pitched in a 7-0 victory over the Miami Marlins, and it’s clear why he’s figuring into the team’s postseason plans.

“Super exciting,” May said of the atmosphere surrounding his start. “Excited to be back. And I’m just glad to get the first one out of the way and know that the first one’s behind me and that I came out of it healthy and strong and ready for my next one.”

“Dustin May struck a guy out to end the third, fourth inning with a slider and he was upset, thinking that’s the pitch that should be there all the time,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And he’s his toughest critic. But taking everything into account, I think that we were all pleased. I’m sure he’s going to poke holes in his outing but he was really good.”

Dustin May’s 40.8 called strike plus whiff rate was his highest in any start in his career. “That’s just how good he is,” said catcher Austin Barnes of the untouchable May. “He’s throwing a 99 [mph] sinker …”

He added, “Then he’s got that slider that’s just kind of knee-buckling, at times. He mixed in some changeups, too. He has a lot of weapons now. Obviously, a great competitor, and he’s really hard to square up.”

Freddie Freeman also drove in a run for the Dodgers, who extended their home winning streak to eight games.
