With the 2023 World Series on the horizon, the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks are preparing for a huge showdown. As the fans get excited for an enthralling best-of-seven matchup, some are already looking over to the future. One fanbase that is particularly looking forward to it is the Houston Astros who are set to wave goodbye to their legendary manager Dusty Baker.
The 74-year-old veteran was informed about this decision to USA Today. As per the report from them, the team is set to hold an event to announce his leaving on Thursday. The legendary figure is not only going to step down as the manager of the Astros but call it a day on his career and retire.
He has been on the baseball scene since 1968. A glittering 19-year career as a major league player saw him shine as an outstanding outfielder. In 1986 he stepped away from the playing field and made his return in 1993 as manager. During 1998-1992 he was the coach of the San Francisco Giants.
Baker would retire in 2017 but came back in 2020 to manage the Astros. From there he guided them to three divisional titles and two pennants. The biggest achievement of his career though came in 2022 when he guided the Houston side to their second World Series title.
Social media reacts to Dusty Baker’s retirement
Sometimes things do not end out the way it was originally. After helping the Houston Astros take down everyone and win the World Series in 2022, this season turned out to be a tough one for Dusty Baker. Fans soon started calling for the sacking of him.
However, things have now changed and fans on social media are thanking the veteran manager for his contribution. One user wrote “Legend of the game,” while thanking him. Check out that reaction plus the others from X (formerly Twitter) below:
Baker now finishes the season with a record of 2,183-1,862 Wins/Loss record as manager. This amount of wins ranks him seventh in the list for the most wins as a manager. Another interesting statistic regarding him claims him to be the first manager to lead five different teams to divisional titles.
It is now time for the Astros to go back to the drawing board and start things from scratch. The winter this year will be a cold one for them as they start planning for the 2024 season and list down potential candidates to replace the great Baker at the helm.
