Cincinnati Red’s Elly De La Cruz has been generating a lot of buzz in his short tenure in the majors. The young rookie has impressed NFL superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes to such a great extent that he had to have a signed bat from De La Cruz.
Patrick Mahomes grew up playing both football and baseball. His father, Pat Mahomes played in the MLB, and the quarterback practically grew up in baseball locker rooms. The Super Bowl LVII MVP is obviously a fan of the Kansas City Royals but given Elly De La Cruz’s insane performance the past few weeks have made him a Cincinnati fan as well.
Mahomes asked the 21-year-old rookie for a signed bat and ball and with a little prodding from his teammates, De La Cruz happily obliged. He signed the bat with the words “World’s fastest man” in light of his recent 10 seconds leg out triples. In return, Patrick Mahomes also gifted De La Cruz his signed jersey.

Elly De La Cruz becomes a national sensation within 10 days of joining the Majors
Elly De La Cruz’s debut in the majors was the stuff of legends. The 21-year-old infielder walked from the dugout and stepped up to the plate on June 7, 2023. De La Cruz faced a 92 mph fastball from Noah Syndergaard and boy did he hit it out of the ground!
De La Cruz struck the ball some 458 feet away and was just one row shy from leaving the Great American Ball Park. Since that electrifying shot, the Dominican Republic rookie has garnered a lot of fans and he wasn’t a one-hit-wonder guy. During the same match against Los Angeles Dodgers, he ran from home to third on a triple in a flash and was faster than anyone this season and hence getting the nickname of “World’s fastest man.”
Elly De La Cruz said during an interview via Republic World, “What can I say? I’m just here trying to give my team a chance to win and put in my best effort out there.” Looks like the young sensation isn’t letting all the attention go to his head and is putting his team in front of himself. Signs of a great player in the making. It’ll be interesting to see what more the 6-foot-5 rookie has to offer!
