As mentioned by many before, rivalries are what defines a sport. The adrenaline rush of getting one better of your arch-nemesis is a surreal feeling. The sport of baseball has seen several rivalries develop but none of them are bigger than the Red Sox-Yankees one. Two of the most successful franchises in MLB history once again locked horns on Friday night.
Both teams have had disappointing campaigns so far. While the Yankees have seen mixed results, the Red Sox are rooted bottom of the division. They say form goes out of the window when two mega teams collide. It was seen once again as the Boston side edged their NY rivals 3-2, in a game that saw Rafael Devers pick on Gerrit Cole once again.
The way the Yankees have struggled this season, one would be surprised by the stats of Cole. This was the ace pitcher’s first loss of the season. To make matters more interesting, here is a wild stat. As per ESPN Stats and Info, this was Devers’ 9th hit against Cole in the last two years. Seven of those hits have been home runs, thus forming a sort of rivalry with the veteran pitcher.
After the game, Cole was all about praising his Red Sox counterpart and claimed that he is a good player. “I haven’t come across any other player quite like him,” Cole said about Devers after the game. The Yankee pitcher recently became the 87th different player to cross the two thousand strikeouts mark. Such a fierce pitcher like Cole right now has no answers for Devers.

There is something special of this big rivalries games. No matter how good or bad a team is performing, the fans get a chance to brag about their’s team victory if they pull one above their opponents. Both the Red Sox and the Yankees have not had a season to remember so far. The two sides might miss the postseason if things do not change in their favor.
However this game between the two sides will be talked about Rafael Devers getting one over Gerrit Cole again. Cole threw six innings, giving up two hits through seven hits. At that time he left the mound, his side were trailing. The Yankees failed to win the game which resulted in Cole’s first defeat of the 2023 season. Devers who made his major league debut in 2017, has been a crucial member of the Red Sox over the years. After losing Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres, the team did everything in their power to keep Devers with them. This home-run was a first in sixteen games, a clear sign of the Red Sox’ offensive struggles. With this win, the team are now at a .500 win percentage with a 32-32 record.
