Gunner Henderson was so elated with his Major League Baseball debut that he couldn’t even handle his helmet. He was batting sixth and playing third base against the Guardians at Progressive Field after being called up on Wednesday. Gunner took righty Triston McKenzie deep in his second at-bat in the top of the fourth inning.

Gunner Henderson’s debut solo shot traveled 429 feet halfway up the right field stands with an exit velocity of 107.1 mph to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead. The number 2 prospect has been hitting .297 with 19 home run, 76 RBIs and a .946 OPS over stints in Double and Triple A this season.

Gunner Henderson also singled in the ninth and went 2-for-4. He said losing his helmet is a common occurrence. “Every time I swing it comes off,” he said. “We tried them all. That was the closest one. I guess I got too much hair going.”

Catcher Adley Rutschman hugged Gunner Henderson on the top step of the dugout and placed the Orioles’ home run chain around Henderson’s neck. “He just looked at me,” he said. “It was kind of a surreal moment. I’ve been able to come up through the minor leagues with him and watch his career. To be able to do that up here with him was pretty awesome.”

“My goal was to make it to the big leagues and send my girlfriend a text before the end of the year telling her I made it,” Gunner Henderson said. “She has the text. That was pretty cool to accomplish that, but the road is just now starting.”

“He put a good swing on it. I think he probably did it for effect, you know?” McKenzie quipped. “Show the flow a little bit when he runs around the bases.”. “I’m looking forward to being able to sit on the sidelines [or] in the dugout and continue to watch what kind of player he is,” Lyles said. “Tonight, he helped us win a ballgame.”
