This is not the first-time Major League Baseball shared their interested towards hosting a series in Mexico, in 2020, the Padres were set to face the Arizona Diamond Backs in the inaugural Mexico City game, but this was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On top of all the news, it is most certainly an important announcement for the San Diego Padres. The venue is named after Padres minority owner Alfredo Harp Helú and has previously hosted a spring exhibition game in March 2019. In 2016, the Padres played the Astros in a pair of exhibition games in Mexico City. San Diego also played a three-game regular-season series against the Dodgers in ’18.

Major League Baseball- “The Padres are excited to return to Mexico and play in the first regular-season series in Mexico City in MLB history,” Padres CEO Erik Greupner said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have a loyal and passionate fan base in Mexico, and it will be an honor to showcase our team in Mexico’s capital city.”

“It will be an honor to represent Major League Baseball, as well as San Francisco, at historic Mexico City for the first time ever,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer. “We look forward to bringing the Giants and Padres rivalry to a passionate sports fanbase, and it will be a great opportunity to introduce the Giants to an international audience to further develop new fans across all of Mexico.”

Both the Padres and Giants have several Latin American players eager to experience the passion of the Mexican crowd. Fernando Tatis Jr.’s availability for the game is currently a question mark, given that he is currently suspended for using banned substances.
