“We’re different” – GM James Click goes through a nasty divorce with the Houston Astros within a week of them winning the 2022 World Series

James Click | Jim Crane

The Houston Astros have decided to part ways with their general manager James Click just 6 days after they won the MLB 2022 World Series defeating the Philadelphia Phillies. James’s contract was set to expire on 31st October when the Astros and the Phillies were to meet head-head for the third game of the series.

It was no secret that GM James Click and the Astros’ owner Jim Crane have had their share of ups and downs throughout the former’s tenure. Still, Click was offered a one-year extension on his current contract which he formally refused and made his sour ruse with Crane public in front of the media.

Click gave some clarification about how he and Jim Crane have different styles of working due to which they were bound to have differences and not see eye-to-eye on a majority of things. “We’re different, there are some things that we do very differently” – stated Click describing his not-so-ideal relationship with Jim.

One-year ‘pseudo-extension’ was not enough for James Click

As a matter of fact, it was pretty well known to the public that Crane had had enough of Click and the Astros owner was all set to lay off his general manager. However, to appease the fans and not look like a fool who fired the GM not even a week after they had won the World Series, Crane decided to offer a consolation one-year extension to James Click.

James Click responded in a way that is best known to him. Being offended by the ‘sham-offer’ as it’s normal practice for GMs to receive multiple-year extensions after a winning season, Click decided to go public with all the drama surrounding this fiasco. He said – “In any job, there’s going to be things that are good and there’s going to be things that are bad. You just have to take it all on balance.”

All in all it seemed Click took his firing in a more composed way. Talking further about Crane he stated – “I think he likes to act very quickly in certain cases. I tend toward a more deliberate approach. He is very demanding, but he also gives you the resources to accomplish what he tasks you to do”. It seems Astros have a job to do in terms of hiring their GM again.
