“It’s time to let go”- Jason Heyward to be released by the Chicago Cubs after this season

Jason Heyward, a seasoned outfielder, is expected to move on this offseason. Heyward has one year and $22 million left on his deal with the Chicago Cubs, but team president Jed Hoyer told reporters on Monday that he won’t be playing for them in 2023. Heyward, who plans to continue playing, has been in talks, according to Hoyer, so Chicago will permit him to look for a new team once the season is finished.

Jason Heyward signed an eight-year, $184 million contract with Chicago in 2016. He is currently on the injured list due to inflammation in his right knee. Before joining the Chicago Cubs, he played his first five seasons of professional baseball with the Atlanta Braves and one with the St. Louis Cardinals. During his 48 appearances this season, the 32-year-old batted.204/.278/.277 with one home run and 10 RBI. In order to replace Heyward, according to Hoyer, Chicago is concentrating on offering playing time to its younger players moving ahead.

Given where we are as an organization, trying to give guys like Velazquez and Christopher Morel, guys like that, playing time, and there’ll be more guys like that that we want to give playing time, it felt like the right thing to do,” Hoyer said.

For the third time in the last four years, the Cubs (43-64) are in danger of missing the postseason. Hoyer continued, “Heyward isn’t entirely happy with the situation, but he understands the thinking behind the move as Chicago continues to make adjustments to its core.” “He doesn’t like it, but he understands where we are. I think it’s been a frustrating last year-and-a-half, a lot of the guys who were a big part of why he signed here were traded away,” Hoyer said. “So I think it made sense for both of us and we’ve talked through it and we’re in a good place with it.”

The five-time Gold Glove winner still has a lot of playing time ahead of him, according to Hoyer, who stated that he would welcome Heyward back to the club when he calls it a day. “I’d welcome that, but I know he wants to play after this year,” Hoyer said. “I always tell people, ‘Make sure you know you’re retired, make sure you know you’re done,’ and I think he’s definitely not there, so I know he’ll want to catch on with someone. And I hope for his sake, he has something left, because I think he has a lot to offer.”
