The 2023 MLB season continues to torment the big names. The marquee teams like the New York Yankees, NY Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Houston Astros have all suffered slumps this year. In a meeting between two teams fighting for consistency, something dramatic was sure to happen. On Saturday night, in the match between the Red Sox and Mets, a disastrous fielding effort led to a little league home run.

Max Scherzer was taken deep twice early on as the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead. They gave up the lead in one of the strangest fashions. In the fourth inning, Jeff McNeil stepped up to the plate. He was able to drive in two runs with a two-out single. What followed next somehow summed up the season of the Red Sox.

Outfielder Jarren Duran tried to cut off the second runner and threw the ball towards catcher Jorge Alfaro. By the time he got the throw, the second run had been scored. In an attempt to catch McNeil at second base, the catcher returned the throw. However, Alfaro went soaring past everyone back into center field. This allowed McNeil to continue his run and reach home without getting tagged out.

I don’t hit a lot of regular home runs, so it was a little bit different. That was probably my first little league home run since little league,” McNeil said after the game. He would have hoped it came at a good time, as the Mets eventually ended up losing the game 8-6. One moment summed up the Red Sox season, while the result spoke volumes for NY Mets 2023 campaign.

Twitter reacts as Jeff McNeil hits rare home run in dramatic fashion

The first thing that came to mind for many was who hit this little league home run. This was the Mets second baseman’s third home run. Usually, hitting a home run means clearing the fence, but this time was different. Another thing is that this was not an inside-the-park home run. An inside-the-park home run means the player rounds off all bases with the ball still in the field without making any errors.

A little league home run is said to have been hit when the batter circles all bases with some help from a fielding error. In this case, the throw by Jorge Alfaro back into center field was an error. Surprisingly, this was the second little league home run allowed by the Red Sox this year. While Twitter continues to debate whose mistake it was, it did not hold back from having a laugh. Here are a few of them.

To make matters worse for the Mets, reports are emerging regarding the potential trade of Justin Verlander. The team had just signed the veteran for a big deal last season. The ace pitcher has struggled to live up to the expectations. Whether he will be traded away to the San Francisco Giants also remains to be seen as deadline day looms over the Mets.
