Joey Votto has set a new benchmark for Canadians in the game, he is definitely one of the best baseball players to ever come out of Canada. The legendary 1989th game ended in a win-win situation for the 6 time All-Star as the Cincinnati Reds took an 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. He made his MLB debut with the Reds in 2007.

Joey Votto passed the Hall of Famer Larry Walker for most Major League games for a player born in Canada. Joey Votto was born in Ontario and grew up in the city’s Borough of Etobicoke. As for the other Canadian Nationals, after Votto and Walker in the rankings are Matt Stairs (1,895), Russell Martin (1,693) and Justin Morneau (1,545).

“To break Larry Walker’s all-time games record is a testament to Joey Votto’s determination, resiliency and enduring skills” Jeremy Diamond, chair of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors, said in a statement.

The 38-year-old previously indicated that the moment he plays his 2000th game in the Major League that would have “real meaning” to him.

Joey Votto said he understands the emotional magnitude of this occasion for him personally and professionally. “Getting the opportunity to play a game at the mythical field that sowed the seeds of hope for a Major League Baseball career is a significant moment for me. Couple that with the father/son connection, and this game is an exceptional moment in my life,” said in a tweet.

Now the next target for Joey would be to overtake Larry Walker’s all-time Canadian records for doubles (471) and hits (2,160), Votto has currently accumulated 453 doubles and 2,093 hits.

“We are proud to honour Joey’s tremendous accomplishment, but we hope to make more of these presentations in the future as he continues his record-breaking career,” said Diamond.

In 2021, he had 36 homers and reached three career milestones when registered his 2,000th hit, 300th home run and 1,000th run-batted in.
