During the Texas Rangers‘ second game against the Chicago White Sox, Jonah Heim was penalized by the umpire for blocking the home plate. From no angle can it be determined that the catcher blocked the home plate. There was ample room for the batter to dive in to touch the plate.

White Sox’s second baseman Elvis Andrus was initially ruled out on the field. However, the team challenged the decision and it was overturned because of the catcher blocking the plate. MLB’s supervisor said in a statement: “The catcher’s initial positioning was illegal and his subsequent actions while not in possession of the ball hindered and impeded the runner’s path to home plate.”

This mistake by the umpires cost the Rangers a win which is very crucial at this stage of the league. Errors like this shouldn’t take place at all with all the technology available at the official’s disposal. Later following the controversial game, fans were on cloud nine as Jonah Heim called out the umpire after hitting the homer in recent match.

He did the challenge motion as he rounded the bases. Sadly, the umpires can’t penalize him for doing a celebration! Fans were happy that Heim was brave enough to remind the umpires of their blunder. Here are a few reactions of fans on Twitter:
