In a surprising turn of events, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was arrested on Sunday night. The southpaw was taken into custody for felony domestic violence charges.
According to reports from Fox Sports, the 27-year-old was charged late at night on Sunday. He was released the following day on a $50,000 dollar bond. This is now the second time he has been arrested over a domestic violence charge in the last four years.
The Mexico-born pitcher was arrested in 2019 on suspension of domestic battery. At that time he was not charged or booked in any case. However, the MLB later decided to step in. The league would later hand him a 20-game suspension for breaching their domestic violence policy. Interestingly, so far no player has been suspended twice under his policy.
His arrest comes on the night when he attended a soccer game that featured Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi. He was named among the notable attendance list along with teammates Clayton Kershaw and Mookie Betts watching the game between Messi’s Inter Miami and Los Angeles Football Club.
Los Angeles Dodgers offer statement regarding arrest of Julio Urias
Major League Baseball and its fans were left stunned when they heard about the development of Julio Urias. The pitcher’s second arrest regarding the same matter in over four years has now raised concerns regarding him. His team the Los Angeles Dodgers has now made a statement and stated that they are now trying to understand the facts and situation now.
“We are aware of the incident involving Julio Urias. While we attempt to learn all the facts, he will not be traveling with the team. The organization has no further comment at this time,” the club said in their statement. After his first appearance following the suspension, Urias claimed that he is taking proactive steps to help him grow as a person both on and off the field. That statement is now being questioned by the fans.
He is now likely to face suspension again as the MLB begins its probe as well. This time the length of the suspension could be bigger given his previous record. What further ramifications will take regarding this matter are still unknown.
Before this incident, he was pitching with an ERA of 4.60 in his 21 starts this year. Last year he finished the season with the league’s best ERA record of 2.16 in 31 starts and 175 innings. How will the Dodgers bounce back from this untimely setback would be interesting to see as qualification for the postseason seems a mere formality for them now.
