“Am grateful for all opportunities” – Kelsie Whitmore becomes first woman to start game for Atlantic League of Professional Baseball
Kelsie Whitmore
The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball witnessed a historical moment during one of its games on Sunday night. The Major League Baseball partner organization saw pitcher and outfielder Kelsie Whitmore start in left field for the Staten Island FerryHawks against the Gastonia Honey Hunters.
The San Diego native Whitmore, who recorded a few flyball outs but went 0-for-2 at the plate, was also hit by a pitch before being pencilled by Edgardo Alonzo to bat ninth. The two-way player has been working with the former MLB pitcher Nelson Figueroa on her mechanics but she’s yet to pitch in a game after signing with Staten Island last month.

“I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given. This one, by far, I’m really looking forward to, because it’s next level for me,” Whitmore said while talking about her experience after the game, as quoted by Fox Sports.
“Playing baseball at the highest level is my goal”
The 23-year-old Kelsie has previously pitched and played the field for the American women’s baseball team between 2014 and 2019. The 2014 Japan Women’s Baseball World Cup silver medalist has also spent some time with the Sonoma Stompers of the independent Pacific Association.
During the chat, she went on to express her desire to play in the affiliated ball and make the most out of her sporting career.
“Playing baseball at the highest level is my goal. You know, if you ask any other guy that’s going to be in the league what his goal is, it’s the same thing, to get to the next level and play at the highest level I could possibly play at,” she said.
“Eventually, I want to play in affiliated ball. I want to make this game my career, my living, and just, you know, be a part of it as much as I can.”
