Milwaukee Brewers celebrate their win
At Dodger Stadium on Monday night, Eric Lauer and four Milwaukee relievers combined to give Los Angeles Dodgers its first season-opening shutout. The Brewers went on to win 4-0. Los Angeles swept Miami over the weekend with 19 runs and 34 hits in a three-game series but was blanked for the sixth time overall this season.
In five innings, Lauer (9-5) gave up five hits. In avenging a 2-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Milwaukee last week, he walked two while striking out two. Luis Uras‘ home run in the fourth inning ended a 21-game 0-for-21 skid. In the third inning, he came on as a defensive substitution at third base. He hit a single shot against Julio Uras with two outs (13-7). In six innings, the left-handed Uras allowed just two hits while getting seven strikeouts and just one walk.
With Phil Bickford pitching, the Brewers scored three times in the ninth. Willy Adames got things going with a dink drive over Max Muncy’s head at third base, which he then extended into a double. Yelich then hit a deep left-center RBI double as a follow-up. Hunter Renfroe’s flyout sent Yelich up to third, and Luis Uras’ sacrifice fly to right allowed him to score standing up. A drive into the left-field pavilion by Keston Hiura, his 13th home run, gave the team a 4-0 advantage.
Kolten Wong then stole second and advanced to third on catcher Will Smith’s throwing error after being hit by Bickford. Yelich, who had been playing leadoff for 58 straight starts, received two hits after being shifted to the third spot in the order. The Dodgers had their opportunities, but they fell short. With one out in the ninth, Smith singled off Matt Bush to put the possible tying run on base. However, Justin Turner was grounded into a double play to finish the inning.
