A total of 12 players and coaches involved in the awful sight at Angel Stadium a day earlier on Monday night were suspended by Major League Baseball. The bench-clearing fight took place mid-match when a pitcher from Los Angeles Angels’ Andrew Wantz fired a 92-mph ball towards batter Jesse Winker.

After being hit by the pitch, Jesse Winker took a couple of steps toward the mound, then moved toward the Angels dugout when he heard someone directly foul language towards him. Wearing a cast on his surgically repaired right wrist, Anthony Rendon met Jesse Winker with an open hand to the face and both benches and bullpens emptied as several pinches broke out.

The game had a see an 18-minute delay because of the brawl, 8 players were ejected from the games there and then. Seattle manager Scott Servais is the only one who wasn’t suspended. Eventually, Los Angeles Angels won against the Seattle Mariners, the game ended 2-1.

The Major League Baseball list of suspension states the names, as follows:

  • Phil Nevin: 10 games
  • Jesse Winker: 7 games
  • J.P Crawford, Anthony Rendon, Dom Chiti: 5 games
  • Andrew Wantz, Ryan Tepera: 3 games
  • Julio Rodriguez, Raisel Iglesias, Ray Montgomery, Manny Del Campo: 2 games
  • Bill Haselman: 1 game

“I would like to say it’s just like being in that position when I’m standing there with Phil or anyone else — but it’s not obviously,” Bench coach Ray Montgomery said. “People are looking to you to be prepared. You have a responsibility to those guys (the players) and want to make sure that they have what they need.”

The actual brawl started a day before the awful scene when Mike Trout was nearly head-butted by a pitch that Erik Swanson pitched (95 mph fastball) during the ninth inning. Mike did voice out his frustration post-game. The Angels followed up on his actions as they gave a taste of their own medicine to the Mariners when a pitch nearly missed Rodriguez’s head. But it all came down to what happened on Saturday when another HBP took place on Jesse Winker.

Major League Baseball couldn’t take it anymore after the fans and the world witnessed a horrific fight scene. They immediately issued a notice to suspend players and coaches, starting the very next day.

“That’s not factual. But I don’t want to get into a war of words with that,” Phil Nevin directed his words towards Major League baseball. “What’s done is done. Yesterday’s over and done with. We’re focused on the White Sox today.”
