Last Friday, the New York Common Pantry enjoyed a feast of turkey as a Thanksgiving gift from the New York Mets outfielder and first baseman Mark Canha. The voices of the gathered people could very well be heard past the corner of 109th street in East Harlem, down Fifth Avenue to the tip of Central Park.
Mets outfielder is not only an MLB player but also someone who enjoys and relishes food. He mentioned, “When I got the call about this event, I was thrilled to do it. It means a lot.”
“These people here are really appreciative to get this food. I’m a big food person. I appreciate a good meal as much as the next person, so it means a lot.” This Thanksgiving day, the Mets visited several other non-profit organizations while sharing 5,500 turkeys and other items with people in need.

Overcoming the small crowd, a man popped his head mentioning, “Is that the Mets”. “I love the Mets.” The team visited Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens. The most satisfying moment for Mark Canha was when one of the residents reached out and hugged the 33-year-old outfielder, thanking him for his hard work.
Regarding the Thanksgiving idea, Mark Canha mentioned, according to MLB.com, “It’s about stuff like this”. “It’s about getting together with family and sharing food. We have a big gathering at my house in California. It’s one of those holidays that I’ve always found to be really special.”
“I really appreciate just seeing my family and seeing the people that I don’t get to see as much as I’d like to. We’ve got my Mets family here, so it’s nice to see the Mets family before I go back home to my family.”
Food and charity not only go well together but also proved to be a vital point in Mark Canha’s interest. Organizations like Common Pantry are a perfect fit for him. Even before he was invited to “Good Morning America” as a food-tasting judge, the outfielder took the role with real gusto.
Mark wasn’t only part of a single organization, but as a team, he took part in all the other areas, just like his teammates. Even his wife is also particularly interested in charity work and has been of great help. Mark said, “It’s been a great energy around the organization this whole year”.
“The Mets are doing so many great things with Metsgiving and the Amazin’ Mets Foundation. It’s really good to see, and I’m proud to be part of this organization.”
