“Clean break”: Matt Carpenter provides encouraging injury update, ensured to be back earlier than expected

Matt Carpenter

Matt Carpenter fractured his left foot Monday night when he fouled off a Logan Gilbert slider in his first at-bat of the New York Yankees’ 9-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The injury seemed very intense as the ball stuck on the back leg of Matt and he was there and then in pain. He was removed off the game and placed on the Injury List with a foot fracture.

Matt Carpenter had the necessary tests and upon evaluation ESPN’s Marly Rivera revealed that Carpenter had a “clean break” and will not require surgery on the foot. The news must be compelling for the New York Yankees fans as all thought that the fracture caused the last Matt Carpenter swing this season.

Marly Rivera tweeted, “Matt Carpenter got some good news, clean break, no surgery; 6-8 weeks prognosis.” Fans have 6-8 week to see their hitter grow ahead of the field and start ramping up activity. Carpenter took a .307/.414/.732 batting line with 15 home runs in 46 games into Monday’s game.

“I don’t want to say a number [of how long I could be out], because I just don’t know,” said Matt Carpenter. “But I’m holding out hope that it’ll be a situation where I could come back in the middle of September and can contribute towards the stretch run.”

“So, we’ll see. I mean, that’s my mindset … that I’ll be back. I’m not going to let my mind go anywhere else that I don’t want. I’m not even going to accept the fact that this will be it for me.”

The team recalled Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday to take Carpenter’s spot on the roster and he was inserted right into Tuesday’s lineup against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

“Carpenter has had a great year, but I can only control what I control,” Andujar said through an interpreter. Matt Carpenter was scheduled to see the Seattle Seahawks team doctor Wednesday and then would go to New York when the Yankees fly to Boston after the game to determine the exact nature and severity of the injury, but fractures typically take six-to-eight weeks to heal.
