There is a saying that states money cannot buy happiness. Well, many happily argue with this statement. The way things have been going on for them, it seems money is not the problem at the New York Mets. The NY side is having a hard time on the baseball field this season. Their recent series loss against the Cincinnati Reds was the first time in over a decade that they have lost five series in a row.

One has to go all the way back to 2012, the last time the NY Mets lost five series on the bounce. That season they went on to finish with a 74-88 record, fourth in the National League East. A lot of things have changed since then. The Mets have established themselves as one of the big teams in the MLB market and have made regular play-offs runs. This year though, that run seems to be in danger.

In the recent years gone by, the Mets have formed a heated rivalry with the Atlanta Braves. The two sides from the NL East have dominated their division with a back-and-forth race between them.

Last year, the Mets led the division for a significant time and, at one stage, even had a 10-game lead over them. However, they tumbled at the end and finished with the same win-loss record as the Braves. The Atlanta side finished as division winners due to their superior head-to-head results against the Mets.

Following the series loss at the hands of the Reds, the Mets then faced the Washington Nationals. It looked like another defeat was on the cards as they found themselves 2-0 down in the fourth inning. A Francisco Lindor three-run home run saved their blushes as they won the game 3-2. The second game of the series was washed out due to rain.

The Mets currently have a record of 19-20. For a side that boosts some of the big names in baseball, it is considered to be an awful record. Their win percentage has fallen down to .467, below the .500 mark. As a result of this, they find themselves six games behind the Braves for the first place. Here are some of the reactions from the NY Mets fans on Twitter.

A pitching rotation consisting of two multi-time Cy Young Award winners, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, has failed to make an impact. The offense of the Mets has gone quite as well, with the exception of Pete Alonso. The two-time Home Run Derby champion is leading the majors with the most home runs with 13. He would hope for some support from his fellow teammates.

We are still to reach the halfway of May, but the Mets might already be out of contention for the playoffs. They are third in the NL East and six games behind the Braves. Catching up to them for the first spot will need an extraordinary effort. If they miss out on automatic qualification as division winners, then they will have to rely on others to lose to get a positive record.
