“He could fall out of bed and hit a .300”- Michael Brantley to miss remainder of the 2022 season due to shoulder surgery

Michael Brantley
The most recent injury update out of Houston is at least marginally concerning, since the Astros are obviously on a trajectory to not just make the playoffs but also go on a deep postseason run. The organization revealed on Friday that veteran outfielder Michael Brantley underwent surgery and will be out for the remainder of the 2022 campaign.
At this stage of the season, it would be difficult for the Houston Astros to have many complaints. The squad has the best record in the American League overall after passing the Yankees and now holds an 11-game advantage over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West.

Will the Astros be able to do without Michael Brantley?

Brantley has been sidelined since June 27 due to shoulder soreness, which was first thought to be worse than it turned out to be. The 35-year-old outfielder was hitting over.280 and had a season OPS just shy of.800 before being hurt. Brantley has obviously been out of the lineup for a while, but you can’t discount the importance of having a solid, seasoned bat in the lineup when the playoffs start. This seems like the kind of absence that might not appear very significant in the last stretch of the regular season but could be extremely noticeable in October.
Having said that, the team did trade for Trey Mancini at the deadline and has quality players who have filled in for Brantley. Mancini can man the corner outfield spots. Because of this, don’t anticipate Houston to improve either now or after this announcement.
