The Houston Astros can be in for a surprise after their famous MLB World Series 2022 victory. The National Baseball Hall of Fame has this Monday come out with the revelation of the 2023 Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame ballot. There are some intriguing names on the list including Carlos Beltran, John Lackey, and Jered Weaver along with 14 newbies also.
Several first-time interesting names also occur – Huston Street, Matt Cain, John Lackey, R.A. Dickey, Jered Weaver, Bronson Arroyo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Andre Ethier, Mike Napoli, Johnny Peralta, J.J. Hardy, and Jayson Werth. Looks like MLB and The National Baseball Hall of fame have been quite busy lately.
The Houston Astros can be evaluated for their cheating scandal back in 2017. Carlos Beltran, who smashed 435 home runs all the while stealing 312 bases in a career that spanned two decades makes his debut on the ballot along with All-star Francisco Rodríguez.
MLB All-star and legend Alex Rodriguez received fewer votes than he and his fans would have hoped for
There were some repeaters too, with three of them receiving 50 percent and above in the vote for 2022, while the requirement for election is 75 percent. These are Scott Rolen (63.2 percent), Todd Helton (52 percent), and Billy Wagner (51 percent). FYI, the selected candidates can be on the roster for a maximum of 10 years. The members of BWAA with 10 or more continuous years of service can vote.
The BBWA ballot has been going through a bottleneck these past years as Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling have received a fair share of votes despite them not being elected. These three do not qualify for eligibility on the BBWA ballot but are present on the Contemporary Era Ballot.
All-Star on 14 occasions and a hattrick of MVPs – Alex Rodriguez is in his second year with a 34.3 percent vote share. One would definitely expect a bigger vote share for the superstar who has hit 696 home runs. ‘A-Rod’s’ numbers are low because of his link to drugs used for doping that broke MLB’s drug policy and led to his suspension in the 2014 season. The BBWAA has given a deadline of 31st December to submit their final ballots with the results set to be declared in January.
