Rafael Devers continues with Boston Red Sox with a 1 year $17.5 million contract extension; MLB Twitter reacts

Rafael Devers, the third baseman for Boston Red Sox, will continue with the team after a one-year extension deal has been agreed upon. The deal was worth $17.5 million and was signed by both sides to avoid arbitration.

After the 2023 season, Devers will be a free agent, which would come as a significant loss for the Red Sox. In the previous season, they lost their homegrown stars Mookie Bets and Xander Bogaerts. The Red Sox are in desperate need of striking a longer deal with Devers and making him spend a significant part of his career with this team.

Devers is an excellent asset for the Red Sox. The one-time All-Star has incredible stats, hitting .285/.358/.525 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs in the 2022 season. He was an absolute wonder in his first season, with stats amounting to .283/.342/.512 hits, 39 home runs, and 455 RBIs.

Simply put, the Red Sox are having a tough time in the MLB. Last season, they finished last in the American League East in 2022, leading fans to boo the owner at the Winter Classic at Fenway Park.

In this off-season, they have lost Mookie Betts to trade and Xander Bogaerts to free trade which has deeply affected the team chemistry for the Red Sox. They went on a spending spree this off-season, making a case for offering a multi-million dollar contract to Devers much stronger.

The mistake they let occur in the case of Bogaerts cannot be afforded for Devers. Bogaerts was in the final phase of his contract last season. The fact that the owners and the organization could not make a proper decision on his future will take a profound toll on the team.

Fans have already started making memes on how Devers will carry this dilapidated team with this contract extension ahead in 2023.

The current form of the team profoundly saddens the Red Sox fans. While many have hope for them in the going for 2023, some seem to have left it entirely upon fate.

Within three years, the Red Sox’s loss of both Betts and Bogaerts will put all the pressure on Rafael Devers this season. Besides, as reported by ESPN, Red Sox have some new signings with outfielder Masataka Yoshida, infielder Justin Turner, starter Corey Kluber, and relievers Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, and Joely Rodriguez coming in from this off-season.

Will Red Sox be able to get back to their form in this upcoming season? We will get to know soon.
