As the second half of the MLB kicks into gear, the race for the postseason intensifies. Behind the scenes though, a completely different program is running on. According to several reports, Commissioner Rob Manfred is likely to be re-elected for his post next week.

According to reports from the Athletic, he is not only expected to win it, but he is also reported to secure this victory without breaking much sweat. The meeting of the thirty team owners is scheduled to take place next week in the American capital city, Washington. He has been serving as the top boss of MLB since taking over the post from Bud Selig in 2014.

Though his contract runs through 2025, the MLB has adopted a policy of election 18 months before the term comes to an end. He was re-elected in 2018 and is hugely credited for the league’s growth in revenue. However, like others, he too had a hard time in his tenure. While there have been, many highs and lows throughout his term, the major dark mark was the owner lockout last year.

This was the first owner-imposed lockout since the 1994-95 players’ strike. This year Manfred and his team brought out several new rules including the highly debated pitch clock. The pitch clock rule though has brought out the desired results he and his team wanted – to reduce game time.

Twitter reacts as Rob Manfred re-election draws closer

While Rob Manfred may have emerged as a hero to the MLB board and investors, he has always been the enemy in the eyes of baseball fans. They have now been afraid to raise their voice against him and called him out for not knowing anything about baseball. The hate for him grew even stronger recently when he admitted to failing to punish the Houston Astros.

The Astros were caught stealing signs in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Their manager AJ Hinch was suspended from the MLB while several players were fined. However, fans were displeased and wanted a much strict punishment for them. This news regarding his re-election has not gone down well and users have once again called him out. Check out some of the reactions.

Manfred has also become the number one target of the Oakland Athletics fans. The fanbase has blamed him along with the owner for the team’s relocation from Oakland to Vegas. It goes without saying that Manfred will have to work hard to gain the fans on his side for the betterment of baseball in the future.
