The 2023 MLB season has seen some big teams fail to live up to their marks. While the likes of New York sides – Yankees and Mets have both endured a disappointing campaign, there are some teams who have done worse than them. One of them is the Chicago White Sox, who were considered early favorites to win the AL Central. White Sox talk crew Scott Podsednik and Ozzie Guillen have blasted the team after the comments by Eloy Jimenez.
Jimenez had been out of action following his paternity leave. He was reinstated into the team a day ago as the White Sox prepared to face the Seattle Mariners. After suffering their second defeat of the series by a 6-3 scoreline, the team announced a major development. Manager Rick Hahn and VP Ken Williams were relieved of their duties.
After the game, Jimenez was asked if there were any players in the dressing room who could step up. His response stunned the fans as he said: “Not really.” This led to a hotly contested debate on the White Sox Talk podcast which saw the crew getting fired up.
Guillen would blame the players for the removal of Hahn and Williams. “The reason they fired Kenny and Rick is because of them,” Guillen said. Meanwhile, Podsednik gave a brutal assessment that the team has no standards. “There has been no standard set whatsoever,” he claimed. The analyst also added that the team has not been held accountable for the entire year.
What is going wrong with the Chicago White Sox?
The Chicago White Sox had previously established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Last season they were judged to beat both the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians to the AL Central title. They would eventually finish 11 games behind the Guardians with an 81-81 record. Fans were expecting a turnaround this season. However, things are going wrong for them once again.
Following their defeat to the Mariners on Tuesday, the White Sox have a miserable record of 49-77. They are 28 games behind the .500 win percentage. It will take a much-improved performance from here for them to even finish with a positive record. So, what is going wrong with them? The answer is pretty simple, the players have failed to take responsibility and the lack of a locker room leader has haunted them.
Jimenez’s recent comments give a poor image of the organization. The actions of Tim Anderson also do not them any favor. He was involved in a huge fight with Guardians’ Jose Ramirez, for which he has apologized. Their former reliever Kenyan Middleton also blasted them for having “no rules” backstage.
“We came with no rules,” Middleton said after joining the NY Yankees. His comment on how players were sleeping in the bullpen, missing meetings, and being late to fielding practice sessions, further highlighted the issues they have in the clubhouse. The season is basically over for them. Their fans would be hoping for them o at least provide them with some positives before the curtain falls down on the regular season.
