Scott Trcka, the scout who drafted one of the best defensive third basemen in MLB history Scott Rolen has alleged that teams in the league refused to hire him because of his age. Trcka along with 16 other former scouts have filed a discrimination lawsuit against MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and the 30 teams.
The age discrimination lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Denver. The lawsuit states that the 17 scouts aged 55-71, were completely ignored by every team in the league because of their age and their older methods of reviewing prospects.
Scott Trcka said via The Philadelphia Inquirer, “I think it was Major League Baseball who wanted to get rid of us because of our age. They didn’t want to pay and they could bring guys in who have no experience because they don’t listen to the new guys anyway. I think they just wanted to get rid of us.”
Who was Scott Trcka?
Scott Trcka was an area scout for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was the one who spotted the future Hall of Fame baseman Scott Rolen. There is a beautiful story behind how Trcka gave it his all to have Rolen sign with the Phillies.
Scott Rolen was a great basketball player and already had scholarships from different schools to play college ball. Rolen had also dreamed of making it to the NBA and become of the greats of the game he grew up playing.
Every other scout thought that Scott Rolen would definitely play college basketball rather than registering for the 1993 MLB draft but not Trcka. He developed a relationship with Rolen and got him to drop his dream of going to the NBA and playing baseball full-time.
This put Trcka on the map because after being drafted by the Phillies, Rolen won the 1997 NL Rookie of the Year Award. Thanks to Trcka, the 48-year-old turned out to be the best defensive third basemen winning the 2006 World Series, 8x Gold Glove Awards, and 7x All-Star. Scott Rolen will be inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 2023.
Scott Trcka was let go by the Phillies after the 2016 season. Since then Trcka tried for jobs at other organizations but not one of them hired him stating the COVID-19 pandemic and analytics as the reason. This lawsuit filed by Trcka will be divided into a class action suit and almost 100 scouts are expected to join and demand justice for being fired because of age discrimination.
