Shohei Ohtani is already adding more records to his legendary career. The Los Angeles Angels superstar hit his 150th home run against the Kansas City Royals. Unfortunately, the Angels lost 9-10 to the Royals despite Ohtani’s stellar performance.
The elite two-way star created history as he took the fourth shortest number of games to reach 150 home runs and 75 stolen bases in just 652 games. This feat has put Ohtani shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest names in MLB history.
The 28-year-old is trailing Alex Rodriguez (646), Jose Canseco (630), and Willie Mays (598). All three players are legends in their own rights and have taken the game of baseball to another level and looks like Ohtani will follow in their footsteps. Ohtani is often compared to the legendary outfielder Babe Ruth for a similar playing style. The Angels star is now leading the league in home runs with a tally of 23, leaving behind Mets’ Pete Alonso.
Shohei Ohtani is well on his way to another MVP season
Ohtani created absolute magic in the 2021 season. The Unicorn, as he is commonly known, had 10+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases as a hitter and 100+ strikeouts and 10+ pitching appearances as a pitcher and in doing so became the first player in MLB history to achieve this feat. He won the 2021 AL MVP Award for his exceptional performance.
Ohtani has been extremely effective with both the bat and ball in the 2023 season. He has 105 strikeouts while pitching and has scored 48 runs on 82 hits while batting along with 23 home runs. Fans were over the moon with his entry into another record book. One fan said on Twitter, “If he doesn’t get hurt, it’s over for the record book” and another called him the “Best player of all-time.”
The 2018 AL Rookie of the Year also became the second Japan-born player after Hideki Matsui to hit 150 home runs. With the way Ohtani is going on about his career, there is no doubt that he will add more records and accolades to his name and be counted among the greatest in Major League Baseball.
