A new day, a new record for Shohei Ohtani. The two-way superstar has left everyone with their jaws open as he somehow finds a way to do amazing things. He can charm the viewers with both his batting and pitching abilities. On Sunday he created another record as he stole his 20th base. He is now the eighth player to achieve the 40-20 (40 home runs, 20 stolen bases) feat on multiple occasions.
While he is known for his home run-smashing ability, one aspect of his game that has gone under the radar is his speed. He is quick with his feet too and leads the league in a number of doubles and triples. In 2021, he became the first Los Angeles Angels player to achieve this feat. He has now gone and repeated this after stealing his 20th base during his side’s 10-6 loss to the Oakland Athletics.
Ohtani now joins an exclusive list of eight players who have managed to accomplish this feat in two or multiple seasons. Ken Griffey Jr., Jeff Bagwell, Hank Aaron, and Shawn Green have also done this in two different seasons. The likes of Alex Rodriguez (four), Barry Bonds (three), and Jose Canseco (three) have done it on more than two occasions.
The Angels star first did this in the 2021 season. He finished that year with 46 home runs and 26 stolen bases, which were both a career-high. For his outstanding season that year he won the AL MVP. He is once again having another stellar season which has made him the favorite to win it again this year. Will he win it? That will be answered later on in the future.
Shohei Ohtani continues to shine in another dampen season for Angels
Shohei Ohtani has generated a huge buzz on the internet which has taken his profile to superstardom. The 29-year-old unique style of play has left the baseball fans mesmerized. He has once again shined like a diamond in another dampened LA Angels season. This could be last month when Ohtani could be seen wearing the Angels uniform unless they make a miraculous comeback and reach the playoffs.
He will become a free agent when his current contract expires this season. There had been talks where the Angels were in “listening mode” for offers regarding him before the trade deadline. However, they took him off the market and instead brought some new players as they looked to make a push for the postseason.
Fast forward a month later and the Angels waived away the players they acquired, basically surrendering themselves. The injury to Ohtani and Mike Trout played a major part in this. They are now going to lose arguably the biggest player in MLB history for free.
Ohtani though had another magnificent year and will be the hot topic of discussion when winter hits the US in the offseason. His next contract will be the biggest in MLB history. Who will get him in the end will be the thing everyone will keep an eye out for.
