Tim Anderson, a shortstop with the White Sox, has joined Team USA for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, according to Major League Baseball’s (@MLB) official Twitter account. The World Baseball Classic is an international baseball competition where nations will square off to discover who the real world champions are.

The 2023 competition, which has been divided into four distinct pools, will feature 20 different nations. Along with Mexico, Canada, and Columbia, the US is in Pool B. The first round of Pool B qualifiers will be played at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 11–25, 2023.

Tim Anderson is on on the injured list, but he has six home runs and a.301/.339/.395 slash line for the 2022 season, giving him a wRC+ of 111. Additionally, Tim Anderson was selected as the American League’s starting shortstop for the 2022 All-Star Game. Anderson has batted above.300 in each of the previous four seasons, dating back to 2019, when he won the AL Batting Title

As of right now, Anderson is expected to start at shortstop for the group. He will be a part of Team USA along with Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Trevor Story, Pete Alonso, and Cedric Mullins from St. Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, and Baltimore. Team USA is the reigning champions of the WBC when the tournament last took place in 2017

Prior to Friday’s game against the Diamondbacks, Tim Anderson was taking groundballs, and he will soon be taking batting practice. The White Sox will need the All-Star shortstop when he returns in the middle of September if they are to catch Cleveland in the AL Central.

“Everything’s going forward,” manager Tony La Russa said. “He’s doing all the stuff to keep himself in shape and pretty soon he’ll start swinging and doing other things. Every report is he’s working really well. It’s all positive.” Since injuring a ligament in his left middle finger on August 6 against Texas, Anderson has been out.
