Making a first impression is a huge task. It can quickly make things go smooth or rough, depending upon the presentation. If this is what he has to offer, then the Seattle Mariners have landed a gem in the form of Bryce Miller. The number 88 prospect made a stunning MLB debut as he managed to pick up ten strikeouts.

The rookie pitcher took the mound on Tuesday night as his side faced off against the Oakland Athletics. He threw six innings and showed dominance as he struck out ten batters. While doing so, he became just the seventh pitcher since 1961 to throw at least five perfect innings in his first start. He also wrote his name in Mariners history as he became the pitcher with the most K’s in an MLB debut.

Well the performance did come against the Oakland Athletics, one of the worst teams this season. Credit where it due though. Making a debut at a big stage is no easy feat. No matter how talented you are or how much the opposition in shambles, to go out there and dominant in such fashion is truly impressive.

After making a solid impression on his first outing, Bryce Miller drew several eyes toward him. His performance was solid and his side won the game 2-1 but unfortunately for Miller, he ended up on the wrong side of history. He can probably thank his team’s offense for this. As per the data provided by Opta, he became the only pitcher in the modern era to have 10+ strikeouts and no walks and yet fail to get the win.

In his six innings, he only allowed one run and two hits. When he was hooked off the mound, his team was losing the game. Luckily, the Mariners did find a way through. AJ Pollock tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth inning. This was followed by an RBI double by Jarred Kelenic which saw them comeback and win.

I’ve been dreaming about it since I was little, I’ll definitely take the results from today,” Miller said after the game. The 24-year-old was a fourth-round pick by the Mariners in 2021. His next start would see him face the Houston Astros. The Mariners’ mix run of results has then sat at fourth position in the AL West, standing with a 13-16 record. The following two games against the A’s could prove to be a big difference if they fail against the Astros in their upcoming series.
