“We got him”- Trea Turner all in for team USA for WBC 2023
Trea Turner selected to play for team USA in the 2023 WBC
For Trea Turner, this past week was noteworthy. In just eight years at the MLB level, Trea Turner recorded his 1,000th career hit earlier this week on Monday. He was one of just a select few players named by the MLB as a member of the USA Baseball National Team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic on Wednesday in the late afternoon. Both of these achievements are firsts for a former NC State baseball player, as is frequently the case with Turner.
With 161 hits so far this season, Trea Turner is only three behind fellow Dodger Freddie Freeman for the MLB lead in hits. Turner has a chance to make history by becoming the first player to ever win the batting title outright for three consecutive seasons after leading the league in hits the previous two seasons. Turner is a member of Team USA’s World Baseball Classic squad, which also features several other top MLB players like Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper, Paul Goldschmidt, Pete Alonso, Nolan Arenado, and Tim Anderson. The pitching staff and bullpen are still not included in that roster, which is already incredibly full.

Trea Turner: The most successful NC state player in MLB history
Carlos Rodón, who is currently third in the MLB in strikeouts with a career-high 191, has put together his best two seasons in his career in 2021 and 2022, which could lead to an invitation from USA Baseball. Pitchers have not yet been announced, but there’s a chance another former NC State teammate could join him for Team USA. During their stay in Raleigh, the pair also competed together for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team.
As for Turner, he continues to be one of the league’s top players, so this is yet another enormous honor for the Pack 9 legend. It’s difficult to dispute that Turner is already the most successful former NC State player in MLB history at this early stage of his career with more than 1,000 hits, close to 225 bases-stolen, more than 120 home runs, two straight seasons as an All-Star, and a World Series ring. On yet another national platform, the World Baseball Classic, he will now have the opportunity to demonstrate that.
