The most common thing in today’s competitive world is having a bad day at the office. In sports, every day several players face this problem. On Monday, Philadelphia Phillies star Trea Turner probably had a nightmare of a day as he committed two fielding errors, and went hitless. Things got worse when he was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire over a strikeout in the fifth inning.
Ever since moving to the Phillies, Turner has had a hard time settling in. While committing a fielding error is not unusual, a player of his caliber making the same mistake does raise concerns. What should have been a routine ground ball, Turner completely missed the ball and slipped up, giving up his second error of the game. This turned out to be his 12th error of the season.
Tensions boiled over when Turner came out to bat in the fifth inning. Facing a 1-2 pitch, he left a sinker pass by. The home plate ruled it as a third strike and called him out. Upset over this decision and the previous things, Turner had a long conversation with the umpire. He would throw away his gear while trying to have a word for him.
Following this heated exchange, the umpire ejected him from the game. Slow-motion replays later showed the ball just missing the strike zone in favor of Turner. However, it was a close call that went against him and he lost his cool. Before the at-bat, Turner also received boos from the home crowd for his poor fielding performances.

Trea Turner yet to establish himself as hero among Phillies fans
It is safe to say that Trea Turner has not been at his very best this season. The American slugger had an incredible World Baseball Classic (WBC) where he hit five home runs in his side’s run to the final. Ever since moving from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Turner has been the shadow of his former self. He is yet to find the same level of success he managed with the Dodgers and Nationals.
This year he is batting with an average of .249 with ten home runs. Compared to his last two seasons, the 30-year-old managed to hit with an average of .328 (lead the league in 2021) and .298 last year to produce All-star numbers. His teammate Bryce Harper has backed him to bounce back and said the ejection could have been avoided.
“He is one of the best players in the league for a reason. He will get going. We trust him to be the best,” Harper said after the game. Turner signed a mega $300 million 11-year contract with the Phillies in the off-season. The fans would now he hoping he can bounce back in strong style and prove the doubters wrong.
The Phillies are currently taking on American League leaders Baltimore Orioles. Having lost the series to the Guardians, the Phillies lost the opening game of the three-game series 3-2. They will have to be at their very best if they were to avoid dropping three consecutive series.
