In professional sports, one common feature noticed is a player going through a tough phase. Many players go through this torrid period as nothing goes right for them. Recently, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has been going through a hard time in his career. He though is showing signs of recovery and accomplished a rare feat on Saturday against the Washington Nationals.
He recorded a multi-home run game against one of his former clubs in his side’s 12-3 victory. The historic feat here was that both of his home runs were hit in the same inning. The chances of this happening are very low as the player has to go through the full lineup rotation to bat again. He is now the first Phillie player since Von Hayes, who did this almost 40 years ago.
While the feat achieved by Turner was one for the history books, it was an outing to forget for pitcher Cory Abbott. The game was leveled at 3-3 when Turner stepped up first and launched a solo home run. Things went drastically downhill from here for the reliever as he kept on giving hits and runs. When Turner came up to the plate again, the Phillies had established a seven-run lead.
The American international would go on to launch his second solo home run of Abbott at his next-at bat. “I never hit two home runs in an inning,” Turner was quoted by APnews. He explained how he is always the one who makes two outs. Turner further expressed that he is happy to be on the other side of this thing.
Trea Turner continues season resurgence following standing ovation from Philles crowd
Following his move from the Los Angeles Dodgers after last season, Trea Turner has struggled for the same form he once had. He had a memorable World Baseball Classic (WBC) performance as he helped USA reach the finals. Since then it has been an up-and-down season for Turner, where he has struggled with the bat and made several fielding errors.
However, there has been some kind of resurgence in his form. He received a tremendous standing ovation from the home crowd, two weeks ago. While some slammed him for projecting his feelings, some stood by his side. The effects of the support can clearly be seen as Turner has produced some good numbers following that move by the Phillies fans.
After the ovation, Turner seems to have discovered his lost confidence again. The 30-year-old has seen his batting average improved drastically. In 14 games after the crowd gesture, he has managed to hit four home runs and collect twelve RBIs in the process. His resurgence comes at a perfect time for the Phillies as they continue their hunt for successive postseason appearances this year.
