On Tuesday at the Bronx in New York, history was written once again. The New York Yankees ace pitcher Gerrit Cole recorded his 2,000th career strikeout. In doing so, he became the third fastest MLB pitcher to do so. Cole also became the league’s 87th different pitcher to accomplish this huge milestone.
Cole is reported to have completed this feat in 1,714 2/3 innings. This record is the third-best in baseball history, followed by Pedro Martinez and Chris Sale, who achieved this feat in much fewer innings. The Yankee pitcher is also third in ranking for the number of games taken to do so. He did this in just 278 games. Only Randy Johnson and Clayton Kershaw have accomplished this milestone in fewer games.
In the post-match conference, Gerrit Cole said that it was a “pretty special accomplishment.” He further added that he was upset about the whole thing for most of the part until “Judgie (Aaron Judge) came through and picked us up.” Cole reflected on the match after a dramatic walk-off win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Despite this accomplishment, Cole was probably not his very best yesterday night. The southpaw gave up five runs through six hits in his five innings. It seemed that the Orioles would spoil his party. The Yankees this season have proved it’s not over until it’s over.
Captain Aaron Judge once again pulled his side out from the trenches as he slammed a solo shot to level it up in the ninth inning. Youngster Anthony Volpe then walked it off for his side in the tenth inning to stun their opponents.

Twitter reacts to Gerrit Cole’s historic feat

Over the years gone by, Gerrit Cole has established himself as one of the most dangerous pitchers to ever take the mound. The 32-year-old pitcher has continued to wreck fear into the eyes of the opposition batters. The five-time All-Star started his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A five-year spell with them was followed by a brief stint with the Houston Astros.
After the 2019 season, Cole would swap Houston for New York. At the time of signing his contract, it was the highest total a pitcher has ever received in the history of the game. Since then Cole has repaid the faith of the Yankees and their fans while playing his consistency. Here are some reactions from Twitter celebrating his historic milestone.
A historic night for Cole in the end. He would however hope for a better performance next time out. This season he now has a 5-0 W/L record with an ERA of 2.73. In his 67 2/3 innings pitched this year, he has managed to collect 70 strikeouts. The Yankees will now look up to wrap up the series by taking Game 2 against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.
