With the midway of the MLB season, the race for playoffs has got intense. Teams are hoping to finish off strongly before the All-Star break hits the season. In such moments, trash-talking becomes a major asset and a secret weapon of players. Before the series against the Los Angeles Angels, Juan Soto of the San Diego Padres claimed they do not fear Shohei Ohtani.
In recent times, Ohtani has become a gift that keeps on giving. The Japanese sensation has raised the bar while playing baseball. His skills, both as a hitter and a pitcher, have made him one of the most feared players. However, Soto was having none of it and issued a fierce warning to Ohtani. The Padres outfielder said, “he’s going to have trouble facing this lineup.” He later faced the wrath of social media users following a poor outing.
Perhaps a way to get into his mind, Soto further mentioned that he is a great player, but he (Soto) won’t be scared to shuffle his a**. What followed afterward is something that has left the fans with a topic to discuss. During the matchup, Ohtani had one of his worst outing as a pitcher where he picked up the loss.
In his side’s 8-5 loss, Ohtani threw five innings. He gave up five runs through seven hits. Ohtani did manage to pick up five strikeouts. The interesting thing though is, he struck out Soto twice. Evidently, Ohtani got the better of Soto while his team suffered a crushing loss.
Twitter reacts as Shohei Ohtani gets the better of Juan Soto
They say actions speaks louder than words. Juan Soto had some big words for Shohei Ohtani before the match-up. However, he failed to back up his words, as his counterpart did the job without saying anything. At the end, though, Soto had the last laugh as his team won the game and took the series.
Things had already gone worse for the LA Angels following the injury to Mike Trout. The situation got worse after Ohtani had a poor outing. The Japanese international later left the field through a blister and confirmed he will not be pitching at the All-Star game. However, here are some reactions regarding the battle between Ohtani and Soto.
While the Padres took the series, they themselves are having a hard time. One of the pre-favorites for the season, their star-studded line-up has failed to live up to the expectations. They are now 40-46, ten games behind the leaders Arizona Diamondbacks. A push for the postseason has to kick off from here if the team wants to make it to the knockout stages.
