The year 2023 has not been kind to the New York Yankees. They somehow find a way to give up games from winning positions, leading to frustrations from fans. On Friday, the team received some optimism as their talisman, Aaron Judge returned to action. However, he was unable to help this side get over the line as they lost again.
Judge had been out of action since his toe injury suffered against the Dodgers in June. At first, the injury did not seem too serious but those thoughts quickly evaporated in thin. After several weeks of sitting sidelined, the Yankee captain was back to lead the lineup, hoping to start turning things around. The game itself was delayed due to severe weather conditions.
The Yankees traveled to take on the O’s in contrasting positions. The Orioles are sitting top of the AL East while the Yanks continue to slumber down. A game dominated by pitching was perhaps a harsh one to lose. Starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Grayson Rodriguez both produced a masterclass in pitching, restricting their opponents.
The winning moment of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as Anthony Santander stepped up the plate. He crushed a solo walk-off home run against Tommy Kahnle to hand the Yankees another loss as they fall 3.5 games behind the final wildcard spot.
New York Yankees need more than just Aaron Judge to save current season
A reason why sports are called “team” games is because one player cannot win matches on their own every time. While Aaron Judge possesses the capabilities to turn things on his own, he himself cannot save the season. In his absence, the team was heavily struggling offensively. His return does give them some confidence, the team knows they cannot rely on him every time.
“We didn’t see the results we wanted to, but these guys are all professionals in this room,” Judge said. He went 0-for-1 with three walks against the Orioles. Judge admitted such a defeat is hard to take in, but they had to overcome it. “You gotta bounce back. Tough loss like this, walk-off hit, you gotta show up. We can’t sit here and pout about it,” the Yankee slugger added. Check out some tweet reactions from Friday’s action.
Things do not get easy from here on as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros following this series. As the trade deadline inches closer, the Yankees might not acquire anyone. The one positive from this game was the return of Judge. Fans will be hoping Judge can motivate the team to at least take the team to a respectable finish.
