“Can’t stop wont stop”- Yu Darvish reaches milestone of 3000 strikeouts
Yu Darvish
Yu Darvish has a very long history of professionally striking out batters. He played long enough that on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, he contributed to some international baseball history. Cody Bellinger was struck out by Darvish in the fifth inning, marking his historic career’s 3,000th strikeout in both MLB and Japan. Then, as the Padres defeated their opponents from Southern California, he added a couple more runs—nine in all that night.
San Diego easily defeated Los Angeles 7-1 thanks to Yu Darvish, who pitched seven scoreless innings while allowing only two hits. The Brewers and Phillies both suffered defeats elsewhere, which gave the Padres some breathing room in the fight for the National League Wild Card. They have moved ahead of Philadelphia by half a game into the second Wild Card place in the league and currently lead Milwaukee by four games for the last postseason spot. The Padres had an almost ideal evening, and Darvish’s milestone was the icing on the cake. And those are hard to come by for the Padres in Los Angeles.
“Big win,” said Manny Machado, whose third-inning homer put the Padres on top for good. “We’re trying to put ourselves in good position. Just get in there. From now on — it’s September — they’re all going to be big.”

Yu Darvish joins Japanese pitcher Hideo Nomo
To have at least 1,000 strikeouts in each league and a total of 3,000 between MLB and NPB is a rather exclusive group of pitchers. Additionally, the Padres currently employ both of them. As one of only two players to reach the milestone, Yu Darvish is joined by legendary Japanese pitcher Hideo Nomo. Nomo, a special adviser for the Padres in the baseball operations division, finished with 3,122 strikeouts overall. “Longevity and just being able to stay in the game for this long — all in all, I’m grateful,” said Darvish, through a team interpreter. “I feel grateful right now.”
Darvish had a vintage performance on Friday night, fusing more than half a dozen different pitches to keep Dodgers hitters off balance. He began Bellinger’s at-bat for strike number 3,000 with three straight fastballs, then finished him off with a back-foot slider for his 1,750th strikeout in his ten seasons in the major leagues. Darvish reached a significant milestone on Friday night when you consider the 1,250 strikeouts he racked up while pitching for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan over the course of seven seasons.
