Paul said, “It’s really about the fighters. You know I’ve been in the gym and I’ve seen how hard these guys work and how mistreated they are and how underpaid all of them are. So, it’s really about fighters pay, getting them health care and poking the bear and disrupting his whole entire business. I’m dropping a diss track on Dana White Tomorrow morning so you’ll see that and I’m not stopping anytime soon. But this is about the fighters, you know, I want to create a fighters union. This is my goal, is to really impact the whole entire sport, both MMA and boxing.”

They do not pay the fighters in the UFC same as the boxing, though both boxing and UFC have a different business model. UFC’s model suits more like a league still, the total money generated by the UFC fighters and the amount they receive is too low.

The UFC and White think they are generating the money but it’s the actual who fights inside the octagon that is generating the money. Surely, the UFC does a great job of promoting the fighters and has built a tremendous brand. Despite that, they can’t just give out 15-20% to fighters whereas in other leagues the athletes get around 40-50% of the revenue.

UFC athletes are supposedly independent contractors, but they can’t do other sports or avenues without taking UFC’s permission. They don’t get pensions, health care, or any other long-term benefits. UFC could release them at any point, but the UFC would hold contracts for years.

Recently, a few big names have shed light on this issue. Francis Ngannou and Jake Paul have been vocal about a fighter union. A UFC fighters union is something many have thought about and tried, but to no effect. The fight business is a very mean business, and working together for each other’s benefit is something hard to pull off.

Let’s see what’s Paul’s message to White for tomorrow.
