UFC CEO Dana White recently went live on Instagram to announce the much-anticipated comeback fight for Israel Adesanya. The former middleweight champion will take on Joe Pyfer in the main event of UFC Seattle in March of 2026.

The announcement sparked strong criticism from fans, while MMA reporter Ariel Helwani openly questioned the UFC CEO’s lack of enthusiasm in a public statement. Helwani has been one of Dana White’s most vocal critics for several years, frequently clashing publicly over UFC promotional decisions.

The reporter repeatedly called out the organization for lackluster announcements, claiming they failed to present major fights with proper grandeur. During his recent show segment, Helwani blasted White for not promoting Israel Adesanya’s comeback with sufficient importance.

We get a IG live video with a once again disconnected, disinterested Dana White who can’t even speak about Israel Adesanya…See how he’s reading about Israel Adesanya off to the side. You’re the promoter of this man. You can’t say from the heart who Izzy is? You can’t give me a little bit of emotion.

The MMA insider expressed frustration by delivering his own promo for Adesanya’s return, claiming Dana White no longer promotes major fights effectively. He compared White with Eddie Hearn, stating such muted announcements would never happen under Hearn’s promotional leadership.

Israel Adesanya remains one of the most successful fighters in recent UFC history, delivering multiple middleweight title defenses and legendary championship performances. However, the veteran currently sits on a troubling three-fight losing streak, raising serious questions about his competitive future.

Adesanya last competed in February 2025, where he suffered a disappointing TKO defeat against Nassourdine Imavov. Currently scheduled against Joe Pyfer, this is a must-win fight for Adesanya, as another defeat could accelerate retirement decisions. Pyfer, meanwhile, rides a confident three-fight winning streak and believes defeating Izzy will significantly improve his divisional rankings.

Apart from the initial announcement, the UFC has seemingly done very little regarding consistent promotion for this matchup. Many fans echoed Ariel Helwani’s concerns, criticizing Dana White for delivering unenthusiastic announcements that reduced the fight’s overall excitement.

Dana White’s promotional style has undergone a major shift over the years

During earlier UFC days, major fights received grand announcements, cinematic YouTube edits, emotional storytelling, and carefully built promotional narratives. The organization was widely known as a powerful PR machine, consistently elevating fighters into global stars through structured marketing campaigns.

Even Khabib Nurmagomedov once praised how strong the UFC remained when it came to promoting athletes and championship rivalries. However, the promotional landscape has clearly changed, with the UFC now expecting fighters to actively sell their own personalities and fights.

This shift has encouraged many competitors to copy Conor McGregor’s outspoken style, creating forced rivalries and exaggerated personas. As a result, authentic storytelling feels weaker, while responsibility for hype now rests heavily on individual fighters instead of the promotion. The current pound-for-pound king, Islam Makhachev, has also talked about this situation in great detail.

In the UFC, I think, they started working on this less (promoting fights). In the UFC before, they would make a star out of anyone. They did it themselves, promoted fighters, paid a lot of attention to it. But now, somehow, the UFC itself has lost interest. Dana is also already a big guy. Other things, he’s involved in many other things too, you know.

On top of this, White has shifted significant focus toward ventures like Power Slap and his expanding boxing ambitions. His involvement in the Terence Crawford versus Canelo Alvarez superfight promotion showed clear investment in massive spectacles.

Many fans believe this divided attention has impacted UFC marketing consistency and reduced the intensity of traditional fight announcements. Nevertheless, it remains interesting whether White and the organization will seriously address these growing criticisms in future promotional strategies.
