Jeff Monson is a former American MMA fighter and an experienced grappler who competed in the UFC. He competed in six UFC fights during his career. However, he fought a total of 89 professional bouts in his MMA career. Monson has a left-wing leaning in his political ideology and declared his intention to leave his American passport in favor of a Russian one.

Irish journalist Jason Corcoran, a freelancer, covers Russian and Eastern European politics. He recently broke the news about Jeff Monson surrendering his American Passport. Corcoran wrote, “MMA fighter Jeff Monson has surrendered his American passport to the embassy in Istanbul and ceased to be a US citizen. In 2018, Monson was granted Russian citizenship and is now a member of the council of deputies of Krasnogorsk for Putin’s ruling United Russia party.“

He has had ties with Russia since the early 2010s. Monson openly supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to Monson in 2018, and Monson hosts a commentary program on a television platform funded by the state. The MMA community is not surprised by the decision. Some of them did not even bother to respond to the breaking news.

During his MMA career, Monson fought the likes of Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Alexey Oleynik, Daniel Cormier, and Fedor Emilianenko. American fighter Daniel Cormier unanimously defeated Monson on the Strikeforce promotion scorecard. He lost a decision to UFC legend Chuck Liddell in his UFC debut in 2000. He fought Fedor in a losing effort in 2011. All in all, Monson had a decent MMA career.

The majority of the fans blasted Monson’s decision to renounce his American citizenship for Russia. Some of them even wanted Russia to send Monson to the front lines to wage wars. No one in the fight community cared about Monson leaving the US for Russia.
