Gina Carano, one of the pioneers of women’s MMA, made some bold claims recently. While the former fighter has moved past the sport a decade ago, she often teased a return against Ronda Rousey. Now she previewed a fight with Rousey and believed she would knock her out.
Ronda Rousey is arguably the first female star in the UFC. With six title defenses, she was one of the long-reigning UFC champions in the women’s division. However, it didn’t matter for Gina Carano. Imagining a hypothetical situation of fighting prime ‘Rowdy,’ Carano confidently stated she would win. Here is what she said:
I do (win against Ronda Rousey). Cause I pack a hell of a punch! I know how she punches, I punch like a trucker. (She has an edge) on the ground, obviously. But, I'm scrambly. I believe I'm one of the hardest punchers that women's mixed martial arts has ever seen.Gina Carano (Via PBD Podcast)
Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey went back and forth a couple of years ago. They teased a potential fight between them. Although Carano hasn’t fought since 2009, she was open to an MMA return. There were even negotiations with the UFC. But the fight didn’t materialize. ‘Conviction’ blamed Dana White as the reason for the falling apart of their fight.
Gina Carano was once known as ‘The face of women’s MMA’ owing to her seven-fight winning streak and fandom. However, she quit MMA after her loss to Holly Holm in 2009. Then, she pursued an acting career and became successful at it. Since she hasn’t retired officially, the MMA gate was always open for Carano. But, a return at this would be highly unlikely, given she was 41 years old.
Gina Carano previews a hypothetical fight against Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes
Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes were two of the biggest names in the women’s sector of the UFC. While the former is still actively competing, Nunes retired from the sport last year. Now, long-forgotten women’s MMA legend Gina Carano imagined a scenario of fighting Holm and Nunes.
Given her superiority in the grappling department, Gina Carano believed she would have the edge over Holy Holm. As for Amanda Nunes, Carano accepted it would be a difficult fight. Here is what she said:
With Holy, it would be more (like) get her to the ground. But, I also believe that Muay Thai beats Kickboxing in every way. So, she's more of a kickboxer. But, she does have the experience though. And Amanda Nunes, she's got that Cyborg energy. I don't know! That one would be difficult.Gina Carano (Via PBD Podcast)
Although imagining potential matchups was fun, it would’ve been great to see the women in action. Unfortunately, Gina Carano retired from MMA to pursue a career in Hollywood. But, her confidence hasn’t subsided as she firmly believed she could win over Ronda Rousey. ‘Conviction’ has an MMA record of 7-1, only losing to Cris Cyborg in her last fight. Her fight contract remained active under the UFC. Given that the UFC acquired Strikeforce, where Carano had last fought.
