“Just stopping the format, still with PFL,” Kayla Harrison dismisses Chael Sonnen’s claims of breach of contract in the fight business

“Just stopping the format, still with PFL,” Kayla Harrison dismisses Chael Sonnen’s claims of breach of contract in the fight business

While Chael Sonnen still talks about your relevance in MMA whether you listen to him or not, Kayla Harrison was however in a full mood to make a factual comeback. Harrison was last seen inside the Octagon when she fought for another day under the Professional Fighters’ League (PFL) banner this month against Kaitlin Young, just like all of her previous 13 fights, Harrison remain undefeated on this one as well winning over Young via knockout.

Harrison is now moving ahead to fight Martina Jindrova in August. Harrison so far had all her fights since the beginning inside PFL only. Even though testing the free agency for the longest time possible, the former judoka and the 2-time Olympic champion in judo couldn’t get a satisfactory deal elsewhere other than PFL, who in the last contract negotiations have allowed Harrison for cross-promotional events as well. However, Harrison might soon put this bonus into working as the main condition of the contract so that she can fight against the likes of women’s MMA greats such as Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes.

Chael Sonnen thought that Kayla Harrison was going to leave PFL after the 2022 tournament

In a recently moderate, verbal back and forth between Harrison and Chael Sonnen, initially, Sonnen said in one of the videos on his Youtube channel “She [Harrison] has now come out and said she’s not going to come back to PFL after this tournament is done, [so] release her today! That is the answer… If somebody is leaving you cannot promote them… The money in the marketing that it’s going to take to do is just not worth it if she’s gone…whoever writes the check is the in charge, period.”

Harrison came out in her defence on Twitter and said: “To be crystal clear- when I said it was probably my last season with @PFLMMA I meant the format of fighting 4 times in 6 months. And that my next fights I’m willing to wait for big fights STILL with the PFL. @sonnench @AliAbdelaziz00 @DonnDavisPFL

What do you make of this back and forth on the understanding of fight business between Harrison and Sonnen? Do you think a lot of fighters mistake Sonnen for the wisdom he really wants to inculcate within the fighters? Or should Sonnen really be held responsible for talking in a contentious manner about the fighters? Do you think Harrison’s trajectory will lead her to huge fights under huge promotions in the future or will she remain a promotion-loyal fighter thus sticking to PFL only?
