MMA is definitely one of the most dangerous sports in the world where fighters risk their lives to entertain the fans. In the history of the sport, fans have seen various severe injuries caused during a fight against any fighter. One of the most horrific ones took place at Bellator 158 to Cris Cyborg’s ex-husband Evangelista Santos.

In 2016, Santos faced Michael Page in London for a welterweight showdown and fans were excited about the fight. Page was undefeated and was making new waves due to his amazing performances and that night it was no different. In the second round, Page connected an amazingly timed jumping knee to the forehead of Santos which dropped the Brazilian. Page was filled with excitement and celebrated the win with the iconic Pokemon celebration but until then nobody was aware of the severity of the injury.

Many including referee John McCarthy mentioned it was the hardest knee he had ever witnessed in his professional career. Santos was taken to the hospital and later shared the gruesome X-ray pictures of his shattered skull. The whole MMA world was shocked by the incident and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan mentioned it as the worst MMA injury he had ever seen in his life.

After the images of the x-ray came out fans were not sure about Evangelista Santos coming back to the octagon. When asked about the same after his successful surgery, ‘Cyborg’ revealed that he might make a return after he heals properly but it wasn’t the case.

While talking about his professional career and retirement, Cris Cyborg’s ex-husband told MMA Fighting,I had the privilege of doing 50 fights, and money never was my biggest motivation to fight. I’ve always fought for the love of competition, the challenge. That’s what motivated me. I’ve always fought for money, never choosing who I would fight or for how much. I leave the cage with my head held high. I have no intentions to return,” he continued.

I would really love to, but everything has its time. I think my time to contribute to the sport inside the ring is over. Have no plans to compete. My projects are outside the ring now” Santos ended his MMA career with a record of 21-18 fighting for various MMA promotions such as Bellator, StrikeForce, PRIDE FC, etc.
